Why should you wash knives separately from other dishes?

There are a couple of reasons to wash knives separately from other dishes.

One of the reasons is safety. If you have knives in the sink with the other dishes, there is a good chance that you reach in for a dish, and you slide your hand across a blade instead. It could cut you wide open before you even realized it was there.

Another reason is to maintain the quality of your knives. When other items bump into the blades in the sink, it damages the edge. Small dings and chips will dull the knife, as well as make it harder to sharpen.
