What is the purpose of sailing charters?

Sailing charters are used ensure the ability to reach places that are unreachable by land. Chartering a boat in order to reach an offshore location, like an island, is much less expensive, but takes slightly longer, than flying on a plane (which may not take you to that location anyways).
