What did Linus Torvalds do with that OS (Operating System) that challenges companies that charge for their computer software?

He made it available for free, and made the source available to everyone. When something is available for free, and can be changed / improved easily, the company that charges for a similar product had better make darn sure that theirs is better, and worth paying money for.
