Nexium, also known by its generic name esomeprazole, is primarily prescribed for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and irritation. It is also used to promote healing of erosive esophagitis caused by acid reflux and to reduce the risk of gastric ulcers in patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Additionally, Nexium can be part of a combination therapy to eradicate Helicobacter pylori in patients with peptic ulcers.
