In 'Of Mice and Men' how does the death of Candy's old blind stinky dog function in relationship to the central theme of the novel?

The death of Candy's dog is corresponding to the the final section when George shoots Lenny in the back of the head just like Carlson does to the dog. Its also shows the hierarchy of power on the ranch as Candy is seen to have little power and Carlson takes advantage.
