Shoes make the man, goes the old saying – and when those shoes are Bruno Magli’s then you know that man understands fashion, likes to dress well and has a keen eye for the finer things in life.
For over 40 years, Bruno Magli shoes have been at the forefront of the Italian luxury footwear industry. But it took a dash of notoriety to make the brand a household name in the United States: during the O.J. Simpson murder trial in 1995, an FBI expert testified that footprints left at the scene of the crime had been made by a size-12 pair of Bruno Magli Lorenzo’s. Simpson denied owning a pair, a claim that was later disputed when a photograph turned up of the former football player sporting Lorenzo’s. U.S. sales of Bruno Magli’s soared by over 50%
The son of a cobbler, Bruno Magli began handcrafting women’s shoes in a Bologna, Italy basement in 1936, assisted by his sister Maria who sewed the upper part of the shoes, and his brother Mario who constructed the soles. The siblings prospered, and by 1947 had moved into their first factory and begun manufacturing men’s shoes as well. Twenty years later, the company launched its first Bologna retail operation; by the mid-1980s, over 40 Bruno Magli franchises had opened throughout Europe, the United States, Japan, China and Australia. The company remained under Magli family control until 2001 when controlling interest was purchased by the Luxembourg-based investment fund Opera (itself partly owned by the luxury brand Bulgari.)
Each year Bruno Magli manufactures over a million pairs of shoes in its Bologna factory. While the factory is equipped with the latest in modern technology, much of the manufacturing process continues to be done by hand, and it has been estimated that 30 artisans work on each shoe before it leaves the factory. Earlier in the company’s history, Bruno Magli’s men’s shoes had been designed differently according to the country they were to be sold in, but in the early 2000s the company began focusing on a global, classically designed look that emphasizes the workmanship that goes into each shoe. Today the name “Bruno Magli” is synonymous with elegance and that unique Italian flair for combining high-end design with comfort.
