When making a turn do not have the steering wheel turned in the direction of the turn before beginning the turning maneuver.?

This is good advice for teaching beginning drivers about turns. If the wheel is turned before the car is moving, most likely the vehicle will not have enough room to turn properly.

Also, if you have the wheel turned while you are waiting for traffic to clear and you are rear ended, you will get pushed head-on into oncoming traffic.
