Who were the first twelve members of the European Union?

The European Union, or the "European Economic Community" as it was originally known, started in 1958 with just 6 members:

Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands

There are now 27 members, with the 28th, Croatia, due to join on 1st July 2013.
