Why was Vincent van gogh a nonconformist?

Although Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) is now one of the world's most famous painters, he didn't graduate from an art school, and famously sold only one painting during his brief lifetime. He was supported both financially and emotionally by his brother, Theo, because his art paintings were not favorably received.
