Warehouse jobs are a good sort of entry level position for people who like physical work. They generally aren’t overly picky as to hiring criteria and can be a step into getting into higher levels of Industrial or manufacturing fields.

Warehouses are needed for storage and inventory for thousands of products in the manufacturing world. They are an essential part of industrial supply chains and various other industrial processes. They are almost always the origin points for shipping, and may be the destinations points as well. In addition they are used for ordinary storage of items when businesses change locations, when merchandise must wait to be marketed, or even when individuals need storage or large or numerous items for extended periods. Warehouses need able bodied personnel to perform all the functions that deal with storage and transportation of merchandise, supplies, and equipment.

Nature of Work

At the more entry level echelons, warehouse work involves actions that people can perform by hand such as picking up items and packing them in boxes, loading boxes on to palettes, moving them on carts, dollies or palette jacks, notating items down in ledgers, and so on. Slightly higher up the ladder are people that have been taught how to operate forklifts. Forklifts are one of the main pieces of equipment used to move items around in a warehouse. They are small vehicles with large, two pronged lifts in front used for picking up pallets loaded with boxes or other containers. These vehicles are very easy to learn and use, but if someone does not have training or experience using them a warehouse will usually put them on more hand oriented work until such training can be arranged. In general this is all very physical and easy to perform work. It can be repetitive, but for those who don’t mind that, warehouse jobs offer a stable and clear cut type of occupation.

The more skilled positions in a warehouse are ones dealing with office work relating to shipping and receiving or with supervising other employees. These jobs carry a bit more responsibility and some may find them more interesting. Administrative personnel such as these in a warehouse are responsible for its employee relations and training, organization, and smooth functioning.

Salary

The salary range for warehouse work is not the highest out there, but a moderate living can be made with warehouse jobs. Starting wages are around 20k per year for full time work but the more highly skilled positions, such as managerial and office positions, can go as high as 40K, especially with time and experience on the job. Higher level managers may make still more of course, but they aren’t necessarily warehouse workers in the strict sense – they tend to deal more with regional management and administration.

No one ever said warehouse jobs were the most glamorous jobs in the world. But they are an in demand position involving honest work that can either be useful as a temporary position or as an introduction to a career in industry.
