In animals with a diplontic life cycle, meiOSis is limited to the production of gametes. This means that meiOSis occurs during the formation of sperm and eggs, which are haploid cells. Once fertilization occurs, the resulting zygote is diploid and undergoes mitosis to develop into the multicellular adult organism. Therefore, meiOSis does not occur throughout the organism's life cycle but is restricted to gamete formation.
