In breaking dawn how did edward bruise Bella and how did he wreck the headboard?

The first time Edward has sex with Bella he bruises her and destroys several pillows in order to control himself. He later controls himself by ripping apart the headboards and no longer harms her.

Bella does not blame Edward for him bruising her, but he holds in against himself and tries to distract her from asking or begging again, until he eventually gives in.
