According to the Toledo Blade, August 31, 1988, Governor George Deukmejian vetoed the bill for two reasons:

1) He believed that banana slugs were an invasive species, which is incorrect, and

2) He thought they were not "representative of the international reputation that California enjoys" (arguable)
