Why did the governor of California veto the banana slug as its office mollusk?

According to the Toledo Blade, August 31, 1988, Governor George Deukmejian vetoed the bill for two reasons:

1) He believed that banana slugs were an invasive species, which is incorrect, and

2) He thought they were not "representative of the international reputation that California enjoys" (arguable)
