If you feel unsafe because the landlord repeatedly refuses to do needed repairs, like maintain security lights or door locks, you may be able to break the lease. Some enlightened landlords have clauses allowing a 60 day notice if you buy a home. In some cities, you legally have the right to sub-let your house to someone else, or to have the landlord sublet it for a reasonable fee. I would talk to your landlord about it, first. Some won't have a problem if you give 60 days notice, and some will hold you to the entire lease. Check your lease carefully or consult an attorney. If you can't afford an attorney, there may be a legal aid society in your community that will offer free or very inexpensive advice.
