Tomas Adams, an American inventor, created gum by experimenting with chicle, a natural latex derived from the sapodilla tree. Initially intended as a replacement for rubber, he discovered that chicle could be flavored and sweetened to produce a chewable treat. In 1871, he marketed the first commercially successful Chewing Gum, known as "Adams New York Chewing Gum," which laid the foundation for the modern gum industry.
