You should let them exercise outdoors where possible, but they should not be exposed to extended sunlight as their backs can get sunburned. Also, their hair is too long to be left outside, where it could get seriously matted.

Shih Tzus are not as hardy as other breeds, so cannot be exposed to extremely cold or extremely hot weather. They are best suited as indoor dogs because of the problems heat and humidity cause with their coats. Their eyes are also susceptible to infections.
