From the combination of two Latin Words: "pro" (before, forward) and "agere" (to drive) The earlier "prodigere" means to consume, squander, or drive out or forward, the later "prodigus" carries the connotation of wasteful consumption. In Late Latin this became "prodigalis". It permeates the Romance languages, but in English became prodigal.
