Does stefan die in vampire diaires?

i am 99% sure that stefan doesn't die. int the book after the return: shadow souls it says that stefan makes it out of the shi no shi , which means death to death where vampires go to become mortals, Damon gets turned into a mortal. so I'm pretty sure he lives.
