Why did nearly headless nick die?

While attempting to fix the crooked teeth of a woman, he cast the wrong spell and caused her to grow tusks. He was then taken into custody and sentenced to execution for his crime. However, the axe was blunt and it took forty-five hacks to kill him - even then his head wasn't completely severed.
