on day 2 you start at 1 ft and gain 3 ft = 4 ft

on day 3 you start at 2 ft and gain 3 ft = 5 ft

on day 4... = 6 ft

on day 5... = 7 ft

day...6...7...8...9...10...11...12...13...14...15...16...17...18...19...

20...21...22...23...24...25...26...27...

on day 28 you start at 27 ft and gain 3 ft = 30 ft (almost there)

on day 29 you start at 28 ft and gain 3 ft = 31 ft (and you are out of there)
