Leuconostoc mesenteroides appears as small, round, or oval-shaped bacteria that typically cluster together in pairs or chains. They are Gram-positive and may exhibit a creamy or white color in culture. Under the microscope, they often appear as cocci (spherical) or short rods, and they can produce a viscous slime layer due to their ability to produce exopolysaccharides.
