What is a substitute for laundry bluing?

I've also wanted to grow a crystal garden and laundry bluing was needed in the experiment. Is the mixture of 3/4 cup red wine vinegar,5 tablespoons sugar, and 1/2 cup cooking oil alright? Please tell me.
