He is primarily associated with power in Buddhism. In some sutras he is portrayed as being a giant golden bird. In others, Garudas make up an entire class of heavenly protectors. Tibetan Buddhist art usually portrays him hovering over the head of the Buddha or other important Buddhist monks or deities.
