Coelenterates, such as jellyfish and corals, respire through a process called diffusion. They lack specialized respiratory organs, so oxygen from the water diffuses directly into their cells, while carbon dioxide diffuses out. This efficient gas exchange occurs across their thin body walls, which are typically surrounded by water. As a result, coelenterates can thrive in aquatic environments where oxygen is readily available.
