George Eastman marketed the first
roll of flexible photographic film, Eastman Negative Paper, in 1884
which was a coating on a paper base. It was called "stripping film"
because the paper backing had to be stripped off during processing.
Eastman American Film was introduced in 1885, the first transparent
photographic film, "celluloid film" or "nitrate film". Reverend
Hannibal Goodwin invented a roll film with a transparent backing
that was more flexible and the Eastman company acquired this film
in 1889.
