In humans, an egg is released from the ovary during ovulation, which typically occurs about halfway through the menstrual cycle, around day 14 of a 28-day cycle. Once an egg is released, it can survive for about 12 to 24 hours. If not fertilized by sperm during this time, the egg will disintegrate and be absorbed by the body. Therefore, the process from ovulation to the egg leaving the ovary happens quite rapidly, within a day.
