How did Stephenie Meyer create the vampires?

Stephenie had a dream on June 2, 2003 about Edward and Bella (though she didn't know their names nor the story back then) in a meadow (which is actually chapter 13, in Twilight the first book) and wrote down the dream, added to the story, added the characters and so on.
