It usually does more harm than good. Not only is the process torturous and deadly for the animals involved (i.e. open heart surgery performed on dogs without anesthesia, brain fluid extracted from cats, burns inflicted on rabbits, dyes and chemicals injected into the eyes of animals etc) but it also does little to further the medical community. Many tests are repeated numerous times by different companies because their is no reporting database so tests often get duplicated a multitude of times. Furthermore, companies are legally allowed to do the test over and over until they get the desired result. So, say if a company is testing the safety of a chemical in a household cleaner and 50% of the rabbits die, they can keep running the same test (or dilute the amount of the chemical) until they get the legal amount of deaths so they can put the product on the market. It is not protecting us, just getting them past legal hurdles at the expense of animal lives. Moreover, we now have things like artificial skin which makes it unnecessary to perform these tests on living subjects. I hope that answers your question!
