Cars run Excellent just before the belt goes. It's not about how well the car is doing, it's about how bad the belt is worn. They can go past the time when they're supposed to go, but they definitely should be replaced before they break. If it's a stick shift the valves could be damaged if you're going at a high speed, plus the burden of having your car towed once you determine what's wrong. I believe it's closer to a hundred thousand when it needs replacing in any car.
