How would you know if oxygen sensors need to be replaced?

For most of us we wait until a check engine light appears and a code(s) stored in the ECM tells you which 02 sensor(s) is not functioning but, if you had the proper scanning device you can moniter the performance of each 02 sensor and determine if it is up to par or not before it sets a code.
