Sir Francis Drake is best known for his circumnavigation of the globe and his role as a privateer against Spanish interests in the late 16th century. He claimed parts of what is now California for England in 1579, naming it New Albion, where the native peoples included the Coast Miwok and other Indigenous groups. His expeditions often disrupted and claimed territories inhabited by various Native American tribes and indigenous populations throughout the Americas. However, he did not establish lasting settlements in these regions.
