Kathmandu - Red Pandas have been facing the danger of extinction due to soil depletion, deforestation and lack of public awareness about conservation of wild life.

The animal commonly known as 'habre' in Nepal though belongs to carnivorous class faces the danger of extinction due to deforestation as it is also survived feeding bamboo leaves and shoot, according to Red-Panda Network Nepal.

It is reported that there are around 511 red-pandas in 173 zoos all over the world though it has not been kept at Jawalakhel-based national zoo.

There is no accurate data about the population of this beast in Nepal. The wild beast has been listed under 27 protected mammals by National Park and Wildlife Conservation Act, 2029.

The red book of World Nature Conservation Association has listed the mammal as one of the vanishing animal. The Network has been working for the conservation of this animal and its habitats.

The red-panda is found only in Nepal, India, China, Bhutan, and Myanmar.
