What is the purpose of a clinical trial in medicine?

Clinical trials are one of the last parts of product testing to insure that the medication is safe. It can involve test groups, placebos and blind testing to determine how different groups of people will react to a medicine. Clinical trials are often cites when a company starts to mass produce a new product or medication to point out the benefits of it.
