In Uncle Tom's Cabin, Tom is a very religious person that is both kind and optimistic in spite of his status as a slave. He believes that if he puts his trust and faith in God and stays positive and resilient, his life could be improved. As Tom is bought by a new slave master, he hopes to live in a nice cottage, not too fancy, but comfortable enough to live out the rest of his days. When he gets there, it is a very bare and bleak shack, with straw as a bed and pillow. Tom, although disappointed, still believes that even the slave master could be kind. He constantly believes that man and his evil ways can be changed. Tom is constantly beaten and eventually killed for his benevolence and kindness by his brutal overseer of a master. Some refer to Uncle Tom as a negative connotation to a black man that will do whatever the white man says, but Tom was a symbol of Jesus Christ's struggle and constant belief that if he stayed and believed with perseverance that any situation could change, it could. And with faith, and giving others faith in the Word (bible) and themselves as an example of it, anybody is capable of good.
