It depends on if you're live trapping the coyote or planning on trapping it for hide or extermination. My best suggestion is to get someone that's done it before to help you out as coyotes may look relatively harmless but any wild animal cornered can be dangerous and can carry diseases including rabies.

Now, as to the live trap, you'll need to use a box type trap constructed out of solid wire and steel caging. And it needs to be large enough to accomodate a large dog, say the size of a German shepherd. You also need to have a plan on how to transport and release the animal as in many states it's illegal to trap and transplant wild animals without a license.

As for the second, less humane kind of trap, some people trap coyotes for their fur or for the bounty on them because of over population. Some people use 'paw traps' which are painful to the animal. But when the intention is to destroy the animal anyway, it simply serves to hold them in place until the hunter checks his traps and dispatches the animal in a more humane way. Say a bullet to the head.

However, if coyotes are a nuissance in your area, there are likely specialists that will remove the animal at minimal to no charge, depending on the damage that they are doing to your person or property. You might also talk to your local law enforcement because in some rural counties, animal control officers are there for just this type of reason.

Hope this answers your questions.
