Video: How do you paint old cabinets?
Painting cabinets is a quick way to spruce up a kitchen without the hefty cost of installing new ones. Repainting anything requires the removal of the old paint before applying new paint, because old, flaking paint will continue to flake, even if a new coat is painted on top of it, and the new paint will then be flaking off along with the old.
How to paint old cabinets:1.) Remove cabinet doors from their hinges. Remove any knobs or hardware.
2.) Lay down doors in a well-ventilated area. Thoroughly clean the doors and boxes.
3.) Sand down all the surfaces well with very fine sandpaper.
4.) Paint on a primer (for oil-based paints use an oil-based primer, if you are using a latex paint use a shellac-based primer).
5.) Using a sprayer or a large paintbrush, paint a thin coat of the color of your choice.
6.) Let the coat dry completely.
7.) Lightly sand the surface again and paint another coat on.
8.) Wait until all surfaces have dried (probably overnight) and attach doors to the boxes again. Add new knobs for a finished look. Enjoy!
