Prilosec, a medication used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other related conditions, was developed by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. The active ingredient, omeprazole, was first synthesized in the early 1970s by a team of researchers led by Dr. Tadao Kato at the pharmaceutical company Takeda. Prilosec was approved for use in the United States in 1989.
