How do you get rid of ground elder?

Black plastic sheeting, garden forks, mowers and herbicides can be used to get rid of ground elder. The perennial in question (Aegopodium podagraria) can have its near-surface rhizomes removed by garden forks even though underground parts further down will need to be dug up. Eradication may require solarizing the soil with weighted-down black plastic sheeting after spraying leafy growth in mid-summer and while using residual control products around and under nearbywoody plants.
