Francis, Duke of Anjou, was a Roman Catholic. Born in 1555, he was the youngest son of King Henry II of France and Catherine de' Medici. His Catholic faith was significant during a time of religious conflict in France, particularly during the Wars of Religion, which pitted Catholics against Huguenots (French Protestants). Francis's religious affiliation influenced his political alliances and aspirations, including his marriage proposals to Elizabeth I of England.
