Why does an author use tone?

An author creates tone through the use of many things:

• Diction - this refers to a writer's Word choice
• Imagery - the pictures that a writer creates with Words
• Characterization - characters' actions, reactions, thoughts, speech, etc
• Plot - what feelings are created by the series of events?
• Theme - the author's message and attitude

Both of the above
