The name White is a misinterpretation of the Dutch Word Wijd. This Dutch Word refers to the Wide Mouth Rhino as opposed to the other species which has a narrow, small and pointed mouth. Also, from the area of it's first discovery, the White Rhino obtained its colouring from wallowing in the calcareous soil, native to that area. The White Rhino has the alternative name of Square Lipped Rhino. There is a further explanation of the Word Wijd. That is, that this Rhino is widely distributed throughout the region. Both Black and White Rhinos are grey.
