Who was rumplesilskin?

Rumpelstiltskin is a character in a German fairy tale who can spin straw into gold. He strikes a deal with a miller's daughter to help her spin straw into gold in exchange for her firstborn child. In the end, the daughter guesses his name and he disappears in anger.
