Use of colour in the only one who forgot?

I often confuse myself when it comes to analyzing texts, but I might be able to start you off.

White road and white town - metaphor for the white people, their constructed need for segregation from colored people; at the end of the story it's whiteness makes it almost forbidden ground for Brandy, because he is not white.

Black reef - I am not sure this was intended, but I speculate that the black reef may be a metaphor for Brandy, because it is natural, native and beautiful - Brandy being represented similarly.

Shelagh - I believe she is represented as something like happiness and sunshine, partially by her "pale gold" skin and "fair hair".

Also, note adjectives like "gleaming", "shining" and when Miss Bella listens to the shell in the "gloomy" kitchen, as these are important for creating atmosphere.
