Previously, Spain was a major colonial power. Therefore, its language spread to many of its overseas colonial holdings. Today, many of its former colonies still speak Spanish. Spanish is the predominant language in the following 3 island countries only:

It is also used as a minority language in the Philippines and the Netherlands Antilles.
