Marcotting, or air layering, involves a few key steps: First, choose a healthy branch and make a horizontal cut about one-third through the stem, about 12-18 inches from the tip. Then, remove a ring of bark (about 1 inch wide) below the cut to expose the cambium layer. Apply rooting hormone to the exposed area, wrap it with moist sphagnum moss, and cover it with plastic wrap to retain moisture. Finally, secure the moss and plastic in place with twine or tape, and wait several weeks for roots to develop before cutting the new plant from the parent.
