What is the difference between slam poetry and performance poetry?

Usually a poetry slam is organized and poets are chosen to take part ahead of time. An open mike is anyone from the audience can sign up when they get there to perform. Sometimes poetry slams are also open mike nights because no one knows if they will get to perform until they get there an sign up.
