Two stroke V-twin engines would seem to provide the best of both worlds; the high RPM and power density of a two stroke, and the large displacement and efficient packaging of a V-Twin.
HistoryV-Twin Engines have been used since their debut in the 1911 Morgan Three-wheeler, and two stroke engines have been around since 1881.
V-Twin engines are defined as having two cylinders arranged in a V-formation, and as using a crankshaft with a common arm to which both cylinder's connecting rods are attached.
Two Stroke Engines
Two stroke engines have only two cycles: intake and combustion on the piston up-stroke, and power and exhaust on the down-stroke. Two-stroke engines gennerally produce little low-end torque, but fantastic high-RPM power.
Because they lack the valve-train required by 4-stroke engines, V-twin two strokes tend to be very light and powerful. Their narrow profile makes them ideal for motorcycles.
These engines use a mixture of gasoline and oil for fuel, which makes them ecologically harmful, and their inefficiency give them relatively bad fuel economy.
