Manatees typically detach their umbilical cord shortly after birth through natural processes. The cord is usually a short, flexible structure that separates from the mother as the newborn swims and moves around. As the calf begins to nurse and gain strength, the umbilical cord dries out and eventually falls off on its own. This process usually occurs within a few days post-birth.
