Yes they are. I was biten by one while doing yard work in Chester County. I was lucky that I went to the doctor when the bite area first developed a black center. I was started on medication and even though the area was painful and I developed headaches, flu like body aches and a general fatigue I made a complete recovery. It did take weeks for the bite to completely heal.
