Why did Henri Matisse start painting?

At the age of 21, he became seriously ill and needed an appendectomy. His mother worried he'd be bored during the recovery period, so she bought him a set of oil paints, brushes, and canvas. As soon as he was well enough to go back to work as a law clerk, he quit. Art became his passion.
